The association hosts an online programme to explore issues affecting the whole family after a stroke.
Ação AVC, a stroke support organization established in 2010 in Brazil, aims to inspire hope and new possibilities for those affected by stroke.
The association carries out activities that include prevention, symptom recognition, treatment and rehabilitation. In addition, it has a support group which is an important welcoming space, where people affected by stroke can share experiences and feelings with individuals who have similar experiences.
This week – 18th to 22nd July, Ação AVC will hold the II AVC Action Week. An online event with the central theme "AVC - A Family Disease", the programme will address how a stroke affects the entire family of the stroke survivor.
"When a family member gets sick, all the family are affected. Stroke is a sudden event and affects the whole family, who often then take on the caring responsibility. Family members are not always prepared to deal with all these changes and may end up improvising the way of caring, despite love and goodwill", explains the founder and president of Ação AVC, Solange Syllos.
Some caregivers express feelings of hurt towards other family members and may notice a lack of support, as well as feeling the weight of the responsibility of caring. "The more the autonomy of the loved one is compromised, the greater the demands and the complexity of the activities required of the caregiver. It is necessary to look at the family caregivers and contribute to making this journey lighter", highlights the vice president of Ação AVC, Jussara Baggio.
The AVC Action Week first took place in 2020 and was aimed at people who had a stroke. There were 180 hours of programme activities, with sessions from 33 renowned professionals. This was a milestone event for people affected by stroke in Brazil.
The programme for the second edition of the event is extensive and includes sessions on topics such as:
In addition to the sessions, every day will feature the "Stories that Inspire" moment, where participants will learn about overcoming and adapting stories of people who take care of those who have suffered a stroke. On the last day of the event, the sessions will be broadcast live, with an opportunity for questions and answers.
