Associação Brasil AVC finds innovative ways to reach young people with the stroke prevention message.
A ten year population-based study from 2005 to 2015 aimed at measuring trends in incidence of stroke in Joinville, found an increase in incidence of all types of stroke in young adults under the age of 45 years old. It concluded that there must be increased emphasis on encouraging primary stroke prevention among young adults[1].
Recognising the seriousness of this increasing stroke incidence in young adults and the evidence that targeting stroke awareness campaigns to young people can increase their awareness and that of family members[2] [3], Associação Brasil AVC has implemented targeted awareness raising activities. As part of its Campaign to Combat Stroke 2021, Associação Brasil AVC organised the ‘Interactive Exhibition of Stroke – Life goes on’, a project with the Municipal School Enfermeira Hilda Anna Krisch in Joinville.
The Stroke Interactive Exhibition is a health education activity that shares content and data about stroke. The activity makes links with mathematics, coordinated by teacher Tathiane Gonçalves R. de Souza. Through various activities, such as the evaluation of pre and post visit questionnaire data, students are taught about statistics. “I see it as a unique experience for the students, who – in addition to knowing about stroke, prevention, symptoms and care – are learning mathematics in a practical activity that is part of everyday life”, said Tathiane
Eduardo Dessbesell M. da Silva, 14, a ninth grade student at Enfermeira Hilda Anna Krisch, was one of the volunteers welcoming participants to the Exhibition. He says he learned a lot and, from day one, he shared his knowledge with his family and friends, “a stroke is a serious disease, which has many effects – but it can be prevented. I learned a lot, when I got to know the symptoms, my family understood that my great-grandmother may have had a stroke before she died.”
