Fundación Punto Seguido ACV Chile raises much needed awareness of stroke and provides ongoing support to people affected by stroke.
Fundación Punto Seguido ACV Chile was established by nutritionists Bernardita Maria Daniels Silva and Christopher Hernán Chavarría Tapia who both experienced stroke in their families, and Francisco Javier Daniels Katz, a dental surgeon who had a stroke in 2015 and is Bernardita’s father.
In Chile, around 40,000 new stroke cases occur each year. Within six months of having a stroke, approximately one third of people have died, one third are independent and another third are left with some degree of dependency due to the effects of stroke (motor, visual, language, etc.).
Francisco and Christopher's grandmother, who suffered a stroke at the age of 75 both experienced a lack of information, support, and guidance to cope with their stroke and there is a need to improve the support for people affected by stroke.
“In Chile there is a lack of clear and simple information on strokes. People don't know about them until they live them, so it's hard to understand what they're up against. We need to make information about stroke clear and give guidance on how to manage the effects of stroke’’, says Bernardita.
The mission of Fundación Punto Seguido ACV Chile is to be the voice of civil society on the subject of stroke in Chile and to generate community and support networks for people affected by stroke and their families. This requires collaboration in prevention, promotion, education, accompaniment, advice and research, to improve the quality of life of stroke survivors and to reduce the incidence of stroke in the country.
“In 2015 I had an ischemic stroke and I live with motor and language effects of stroke. This experience and the difficulties I have had to face fuel my desire to support other people who are going through the same thing” explains Francisco.
Fundación Punto Seguido ACV Chile facilitates stroke support groups for stroke survivors and families. Through these groups the foundation accompanies people affected by stroke, enabling people to be part of a guided community, to help to address how various issues are experienced after a stroke. The foundation also educates the public and people affected by stroke by providing relevant information on strokes and how to prevent them.
"Education is essential for the prevention and improvement of the living conditions of people with stroke and their families, helping to give new meaning to their lives through guidance and support", says Christopher.
