WSO has launched a major initiative: The WSO Future Stroke Leaders Programme (FSLP). This is an initiative that builds on our commitment to develop a high-level of academic skills in the next generation of stroke professionals.
Due to the restrictions on travel caused by COVID-19, an on-line learning programme was developed. The programme consists of educational and interactive workshops, case studies and simulations.
The curriculum spans the stroke care continuum from prevention, acute treatment, post-stroke care through to rehabilitation and supports the development and exercise of key skills including research and peer review, writing for publication, care quality improvement tools, multidisciplinary collaboration, project design, management and stroke advocacy.
Future Stroke Leader testimonial: ‘’I am very appreciative of this initiative by WSO, and the opportunity to hear from stroke luminaries. Prof Craig's life and career advice really struck with me in the first session, the bit about seizing opportunities, reaching out to people and how a big part of research is also about people relationships. Really appreciated that sharing.’’
The first virtual learning session with the participants of the programme and mentors took place in January 2021. The format of the session was a “flipped classroom” where participants were introduced to the content and pre-reading materials before the session. Subsequently, stroke leaders shared their questions and regional stroke care systems’ concerns with the speakers and the taskforce members. During the session the team worked through the content and questions together with the speakers and the taskforce team. The learning session offered many possibilities for active discussions and group work. Participants discussed pressing regional matters and possible ways to improve regional stroke care systems.
The session quality was highly rated by the participants and speakers.
The next learning session is scheduled for March, 2021. The format of the session will be ‘’standard classroom’’ with the group discussions. A respective case study and simulation will be added before and after the learning session.
Furthermore, the website together with the member log in area went live in February. Participants are currently actively engaged in the programme discussions through SLACK interface and member log in area.
We are wishing all the best of luck to WSO Future Stroke Leaders in their Leadership Journey and hoping to see a positive regional Stroke Care changes very soon!
