We are delighted to introduce a project group that focuses on unveiling the cost of acute ischemic stroke in LATAM.
Stroke has a significant worldwide social and economic impact. The low-middle income countries are disproportionally affected, given the high costs of new technologies and treatments for acute and post-acute stroke care, and to indirect costs due to loss of productivity, caregiver expenses and institutionalization.
Assessing the real-world costs and outcomes of stroke treatment through accurate costing methods is an important step to better allocate and optimize resources, and to implement strategies to improve patients’ outcomes in the stroke care pathway.
The project team expects that the outcomes will encourage changes in national health policies, focusing on the reduction of the most prevalent stroke risk factors, improving the quality of stroke care, and implementing strategies that reduce the costs and the morbimortality of stroke in Latin America.
The specific outcomes from this project are:
• To determine the direct costs of acute ischemic stroke treatment in different Latin American countries.
• To validate a standardized data-collection spreadsheet to aggregate cost and outcomes among the acute ischemic stroke care pathway and across different countries.
• To determine the cost-effectiveness of acute ischemic stroke treatment strategies in the same country.
• To list opportunities for improvement and offer suggested solutions, related to the cost and subsequent clinical outcomes for stroke care.
