At the WSO Congress in Abu Dhabi, the GENder Equity and diverSity In Stroke Care (GENESIS) Committee was officially established to address sex and gender-related disparities in stroke incidence, treatment, and outcomes. The mission of GENESIS is to create an inclusive environment, provide networking and mentorship opportunities, advocate for policy changes, and promote inclusive education, research, clinical, and leadership practices. Ensuring gender diversity in academic and clinical practice and leadership is equally important. The WSO has a unique global platform to increase the representation of women professionals in stroke care systems, advocate for global stroke communities to improve access to knowledge and care, encourage clinical trial participation, and develop culturally tailored guidelines and educational tools for providers and patients/caregivers.
Leadership: Chair Dr. Aleksandra Pikula (Canada) and Vice-Chair Dr. Valeria Caso (Italy), supported by a diverse group of members from various regions and professional backgrounds.
Governance: The committee includes women, men, and gender-diverse representatives from diverse regions and backgrounds, with members serving four-year terms, renewable once.
Scope, Focus, Objectives & Activities: The GENESIS scope employs a flagship approach to drive high-impact projects. It focuses on initiatives that can create pragmatic and significant change, ensuring broader adoption and setting leading examples within the field. Key focus areas include research, mentorship, leadership, advocacy, and promotion initiatives. The objectives and activities are centered on promoting gender equity discussions, creating networking and mentorship opportunities, amplifying the voices of women and gender-diverse individuals, and advocating for inclusive research practices.
