World Stroke Day was celebrated on October 19 in Taungyi, Shan state, Myanmar, which was organized by Myanmar Neurological Society. Every year, the 29 October serves as a day of stroke awareness across the various cities in Myanmar.
A 3km walk was done as a part to improve stroke awareness as well as the importance of physical activity in stroke prevention. About 1200 participants was involved with the aim of "Walk for Stroke prevention".
Professor Dr. Win Min Thit, President of Myanmar Neurological Society, explained the aim and importance of World Stroke Day and public awareness activities. She spoke " 1 in 4 of us will have a stroke on anytime of life, and World Stroke Organization marked as World Stroke Day on 29 October to raise awareness of stroke prevention, treatment and support. This is a 10th World Stroke Day ceremony of Myanmar". She also inspired the participants to stave off the stroke with World Stroke Day 2019 theme "Don't be the ONE".
Education program on stroke was also done which was explained by Neurologists and Neurosurgeon from Myanmar Neurological Society. The talked about risk factors for stroke, symptoms of stroke and its management, and preventive steps for stroke.
Finally, participants had opportunity for screening for vascular risk factors such as hypertension, blood cholesterol, blood sugar and body weight measurement.
