The World Stroke Organization (WSO) is glad to announce that a WSO taskforce for prehospital Care (WSOTPC) aiming to improve stroke prehospital care worldwide has been established.
The co-chairs of the new taskforce are Dr. Renyu Liu from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, USA and Dr. Jing Zhao, from Fudan University in Shanghai, China. The current members also include Dr. Anthony Rudd from King’s College, London, UK; Dr. Gary Ford from University of Oxford, Oxford, UK, Mr. David Waters from Council of Ambulance Authorities, New Zealand & Australia; Dr. Dou Li from Beijing Emergency Medical Center, Beijing, China; Ms. Rita Melifonwu from Stroke Action Nigeria, Nigeria; Dr. Grethe Andersen from Aarhus University, Aarhus, Denmark, and Dr. Siju V Abraham from Jubilee Mission Hospital and Medical College & Research Institute, Kerala, India. The mission of WSO taskforce for prehospital Care (WSOTPC) is to reduce the global burden of stroke with a special focus in prehospital stroke care. The WSOPTC will work with WSO Stroke Awareness Campaign to improve stroke awareness and to work with relevant parties including the Coalition of Special Taskforces for Stroke (CSTS) to define the key issues related to stroke prehospital care that need work to improve stroke prehospital care. These include the domains of professional awareness of stroke, optimizing pre-hospital processes of care, development of novel tools to support better quality care, advocate international, national and local policy improvement, and support the optimal transition from prehospital care to in-hospital care. The WSOTPC is created with inclusiveness and diversity as fundamental priorities. The World Stroke Organization Taskforce for Prehospital care (WSOTPC) and the Coalition of the Special Taskforces for Stroke (CSTS) has reached an agreement to work together for overlapping objectives to improve stroke prehospital care with a focus in the prehospital settings. This was initiated by Professor Anthony Rudd, a board director of WSOTPC and the president of the CSTS along with Dr. Renyu Liu and Dr. Jing Zhao, the co-Chairs of the WSOTPC. CSTS is a non-profit international organization with the goal in improving stroke care by raising stroke awareness in a global scale using novel strategies including Stroke 120 for China and Stroke 112 for countries and regions where 112 is used as an emergency phone number, and critical issues related stroke prehospital care. Professor Rudd is stroke medicine expert at the King’s college, London and the former National Clinical Director for stroke in England. Dr. Zhao is the Chair of the Department of Neurology at the Minhang Hospital Affiliated to Fudan University and a co-Director of the Stroke 120 Special Taskforce of Chinese Stroke Association. Dr. Liu is a professor of Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care, and Department of Neurology at Hospital of University of Pennsylvania Health System, Philadelphia, USA. Dr. Rudd, Dr. Zhao, and Dr. Liu have been collaborating in addressing issues in stroke prehospital care for multiple years with a track record of publications.

The World Stroke Organization Taskforce for Prehospital care (WSOTPC) and the Global Alliance of Independent Networks focused on Stroke trials (GAINS) (https://www.globalstroketrials.org/) reached an agreement to work synchronously with overlapping objective to create and enhance a research network for large, global, collaborative research projects focused on prehospital stroke care. This was initiated by Professor Gary Ford along with Professor Andrew Demchuk. Dr. Ford is a Professor of stroke medicine at Oxford University, United Kingdom, and one of the board directors of the WSOTPC. Dr. Demchuk is the Director of the Calgary Stroke Program and a Professor at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Calgary, Canada.

The World Stroke Organization Taskforce for Prehospital care (WSOTPC) and the Indian Emergency Medicine fraternity under the Academic College of Emergency Experts (ACEE) India and Emergency Medicine Association India (EMA India) reached an agreement to work synchronously with overlapping objectives to improve stroke prehospital care in India. This was initiated by Dr Siju Abraham, one of the board directors of the WSOTPC. He is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine, Jubilee Mission Hospital, Medical College & Research Institute in India.
