The Stroke Society of the Philippines in collaboration with the WSO, embarked on a nationwide stroke training, Cardinal Principles of Stroke Treatment (CPOST). The aim of the workshop is to help organize stroke teams, develop stroke ready hospitals and acute stroke units. This is an on-going stroke training which started last 2015.

This year, the Stroke Society of the Philippines had its 19th Annual Convention at the Taal Vista Hotel, Tagaytay last Aug 16-17, 2018 with its theme: Stroke and Critical Care. This was attended by 848 doctors and nurses from the different regions of the country.
Pre Congress Stroke Training (CPOST)

There was a pre congress stroke training (CPOST) and was participated by 230 doctors and nurses from 22 different hospitals all over the country. The topics included:
Stroke Diagnosis and Treatment, Neuroimaging, Rehabilitation and How to Set up Acute Stroke Ready Hospital. In the afternoon, a Dysphagia Workshop and Thrombolysis Simulation was done.

Train the Trainers Workshop: Establishing Acute Stroke Ready Hospitals

To facilitate a nationwide coverage of stroke education, a Train the Trainers Workshop was held last November 13, 2018 in Iloilo City. This was participated by 136 stroke leaders from 18 different hospitals.
The goal is to have every region in the Philippines access Acute Stroke Ready Hospitals. This is one of the biggest projects of SSP and is supported by the Department of Health, Boehringer and Ever Pharma. This requires coordination with the stroke society and its chapters, national and local government and the support from WSO. The ultimate goal is by 2020, all 7,100 islands of the Philippines will be educated on stroke awareness, treatment and rehabilitation.

Mindanao CPOST Training

Despite the current martial law in Muslim Mindanao, the CPOST team reached out to the physicians and other health workers coming from Jolo, Sulu where mortality from stroke is one of the highest in the country.
The CPOST was done in Zamboanga City last December 11, 2018 and was participated by 80 physicians and nurses.

This year, four more train the trainers workshop will be held in the different regions of the country. This will target the stroke leaders, equipping them of stroke skills and knowledge, cascading the training to the different hospitals in the country.
The different SSP chapters all over the country will oversee, support and help the different hospitals to improve the stroke awareness and care. To evaluate the outcome of the stroke training, each hospitals is encouraged to participate in the RES-Q data base to assess improvement in stroke care.
Drafting of the Philippine Stroke Government Policy
The Stroke Society of the Philippines held several meetings with the officers of the Department of Health for the drafting of an Administrative Order on the National Policy on the Prevention, Control and Management of Acute Stroke in the Philippines. The aims are the following: 1) To prioritize the acute care and management of stroke; 2) To continue the stroke medicine access program, providing free RTPA, antihypertensive and antidiabetic medications and 3) To assist government hospitals in establishing Acute Stroke Ready and Acute Stroke Units.

Philippine RUN for STROKE 2019
The World Stroke Organization has chosen the Philippines as the venue for the 2019 World Stroke Day. Runners, athletes, health advocates, stroke survivors and their families are signing up for the run/walk for stroke campaign. This will be done simultaneously in the different regions of the Philippines. The main event will be on October 6, 2019 at the Mall of Asia Grounds. Join us as we altogether as One World Fight Against Stroke.
