Increase and engage SSO membership

We currently have 60 SSO members of WSO. There are 12 brand new members this year: Bulgaria Heart for Heart Foundation, Stroke Foundation of Jamaica, Seychelles Stroke Foundation, Strokeföreningen Malmö Sweden, Joel Samson Ruvugo Group Tanzania, Tanzania Heart Club, National Stroke Aid Zambia, Mineira Stroke Association Brazil, Counterstroke Fiji, National Stroke Association Malaysia, Stroke Central Region New Zealand and IDA Stroke Awareness Foundation Nigeria.

Our SSO membership continues to contribute to blogs about their lived experience of stroke, stroke prevention awareness and long-term support.

SSO topics for the main program at the ESO-WSO Conference in Vienna in 2020 are agreed and speakers will be confirmed in the coming months for:

Meaningful involvement of people with lived experience of stroke
Supporting life after stroke
Measuring the effectiveness of stroke prevention campaigns

Following the May 2019 WSO Strategy Review, the SSO Committee agreed that additional plans to deliver impact by 2022 will include a mapping exercise of all known SSOs globally, including data on income, members, activities and beneficiaries through desk research and a questionnaire. The main objective of this mapping is to begin a process of assessing the impact SSOs have on stroke by contributing to stroke prevention, treatment and support. The desk research has begun and the questionnaires circulated at the end of September and beginning of October to SSOs around the world.

Mobilise SSO engagement in the World Stroke Campaign

SSOs are contributing consumer stories and registering their events for World Stroke Day. Many SSOs and other WSO members across the world will link their events to the World Stroke Day Relay. Members will fly the 'Don't Be The One' campaign flag and take photos to be shared on social media as part of the virtual relay. Countries that are planning to join the relay so far are the Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Nigeria, Ghana and Sierra Leone.

National Stroke Association of Malaysia Stroke Games

From 19-20 October 2019 the National Stroke Association of Malaysia

NASAM will organize its second Stroke Games. The Games showcase the abilities of stroke survivors and the possibilities of life after a stroke. The Games are also an opportunity to generate awareness of stroke in Malaysia where stroke awareness is still low and many people experiencing a stroke do not seek medical help fast enough.

Stroke Foundation Australia 20 years of stroke audit report

Despite advancements in acute stroke treatment in the past two decades, the disease continues to place a heavy burden on Australia as numbers rise. There will be more than 56,000 strokes in Australia in 2019 alone and that figure is on track to reach more than 132,000 by 2050, equating to one stroke every four minutes.
An evaluation of 20 years of the Stroke Foundation’s National Stroke Audit Program has found while more Australians are surviving stroke than ever before, not all treatment is equal. It showed more needs to be done to increase access to best practice stroke treatment and care for regional and rural Australians.
The Stroke Foundation’s National Audit program delivers an annual snapshot of stroke treatment and care, highlighting areas where the system is working well and where changes are needed. It empowers clinicians, health administrators and government to drive quality improvement.
Key insights from 20 years of stroke audit report:

Number of hospitals providing blood clot busting drugs(thrombolysis) increased from 4 percent (1999) to 77 percent (2017).
Patients who receive treatment in a stroke unit up from 53 percent (2007) to 70 percent (2017).
Patients receiving advice on risk factor modification up from 42 percent (2007) to 62 percent (2017).
Mood assessment 34 percent (2012) to 56 percent (2018).
Discharge care plan 50 percent (2010) to 68 percent (2018).
