August was a significant month for WSO, with several important activities taking place.
The Mexican Stroke Association (AMEVASC) has done outstanding work in training evaluators for the WSO/SIECV Stroke Center Certification Program. As newly certified hospitals in Mexico were recognized at the AMEVASC Congress in Oaxaca, an additional 20 hospitals are currently preparing for certification. Between June and August, more hospitals were certified in Latin America, specifically in Brazil and Peru. Meanwhile, we have been working with the Ministry of Health in Colombia to integrate the WSO Stroke Center Certification into their National Stroke Program.
The first hospitals in the ASEAN region were certified, led by Prof. Deidre de Silva, in Malaysia and Jamaica, with more hospitals in preparation.
A major milestone was achieved with the first-ever Stroke Standard inspection at Christian Medical College Ludhiana’s Advanced Stroke Center by the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals (NABH), a WSO partner in certification efforts in India. Congratulations to our President-Elect, Jeyaraj Pandian, for achieving hospital accreditation and for his leadership in establishing this important partnership.
Also in August, there was intensive work in Tanzania to support the Ministry of Health in developing a national stroke program, including hospital visits and training, as well as a workshop to raise awareness across the network in Dar Es Salaam. Congratulations to Dr. Sarah Matuja, our WSO Future Stroke Leader, for her leadership in the country, the Ministry of Health for their initiative, the team at Muhimbili National Hospital-Mloganzila in Dar es Salaam for being the heart of the program, and Bugando Hospital in Mwanza for structuring the service and teamwork.
Finally, we are wrapping up preparations for WSO’s international events, aimed at providing knowledge and technical support to countries worldwide, with the goal of reducing the impact of stroke.
We will have this year 2 WSO’s Global Stroke Alliances (GSA): in Istanbul (Turkey) and Bogotá (Colombia).
The WSO’s GSA is a regional meeting and unites healthcare decision-makers, administrators, stroke experts, industry leaders, and patient advocates from the region to discuss the implementation of stroke care. Through interactive workshops, delegates share knowledge and expertise, aiming to develop effective national plans for stroke prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation. A key component of the GSA is the Ministerial Meeting, where Ministers of Health and ministry representatives collaborate with stroke experts to examine stroke care in their countries, identify gaps, and explore opportunities to enhance patient outcomes within their national healthcare systems.
If you live in one of the participating countries (Turkey, Egypt, Iran, Pakistan, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, Iraq, Bosnia, Kosovo, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar), join us at the GSA in Istanbul, Turkey, on October 17-19, 2024 (globalstrokealliance.org), just before the World Stroke Congress.
If you live in Latin America, join us in the GSA in Bogota, Colombia, November 20-22, 2024 (acvlatinoamerica.com) together with SIECV Congress.
The 2024 World Stroke Congress (WSC2024) in Abu Dhabi will mark the first time this meeting is held in the MENA region. The WSC is a leading global event that unites health professionals to discuss the latest advancements in stroke care. The congress offers a platform for exchanging ideas, sharing cutting-edge research, and fostering collaborations to enhance stroke prevention and care. With a comprehensive program of keynote presentations, workshops, and panel discussions, participants can explore innovative treatment strategies and policy development. The event also provides valuable networking opportunities, emphasizing the importance of international collaboration in addressing the challenges of stroke and improving outcomes for patients everywhere. We are waiting for you in October 23-26! (worldstrokecongress.org)
