Thrombolysis is treatment with a stroke medication for strokes caused by a blood clot in the brain.
When stroke patients are given a treatment called thrombolysis they are given clot-busting drugs known as tPA. Treatment with this drug can increase the chance of a good outcome by 30%. This treatment can be administered up to 4.5 hours of symptom onset in many patients with ischaemic stroke. The earlier it is given, the greater the effect. tPA is on the WHO essential medicines list, which means that governments should make it availalbe through their universal healthcare provision.
