Member Bio

I am a Neurologist and Neuroscientist with expertise in Neuroepidemiology, Neurovascular Ultrasound, and Translational Stroke Research.

I completed medical training at the Faculty of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences (University of Yaoundé I, Cameroon), neurology residency and stroke fellowship at the University of Geneva (Switzerland), epidemiology training at Universite Pierre et Marie Curie (France), and laboratory training at the University of Liverpool (United Kingdom). After a fellowship at the Malawi-Liverpool-Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Programme in Blantyre (Malawi), I joined the University of Alberta Doctoral Neuroscience Program where I studied the epidemiology, pathobiology, and biomarkers of carotid atherosclerosis and founded the Carotid Atherosclerosis and Stroke Collaboration (CASCO), an international research consortium aiming to improve stroke risk stratification in subjects with carotid atherosclerosis through score design and identification of novel biomarkers.

My research has been supported by grants from the Geneva University Hospital Foundation, the Wellcome Trust, Alberta Innovates, the Killam Trust, and the Bank of Montreal Financial Group. I have received several prizes and distinctions including the American Academy of Neurology International Scholarship Award, the American Academy of Neurology Patatucci Advocacy Leadership Award, the 2022 European Stroke Organization Young Investigator Award, the 2022 European Atherosclerosis Society Young Investigator Fellowship, and the University of Alberta Andrew Stewart Memorial Graduate Prize, to name a few. I have over 60 peer-reviewed publications in reputable journals such as Lancet, JAMA Neurology, Neurology, and Stroke. I have served as Section Editor for the journal Stroke and review for the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, Stroke, Neurology, and the International Journal of Neurology.

I am currently a Wellcome Trust Early Career Fellow at the University of Oxford Centre for Prevention of Stroke and Dementia, working with Prof. Peter Rothwell to establish the Oxford-Cameroon Atherosclerosis and Stroke Study (OxCASS). The overarching goal of the project is to investigate ethnic differences in stroke aetiology in the United Kingdom and clarify stroke epidemiology and mechanisms in Cameroon, Central Africa.

My long-term career goal is to establish a comprehensive atherosclerosis and stroke program in Africa with the mission of (1) generating evidence to inform local and regional stroke policies and guidelines, (2) training the next generations of stroke clinicians and scientists, (3) enabling the inclusion of African patients and populations into international stroke research initiatives, and (4) delivering quality stroke care for all.

Besides work, I enjoy listening to music, singing in choirs, jogging, reading, writing, and watching/listening to documentaries and podcasts on various topics.
