Member Bio

Yina Quique (pronounced Gina Key-keh) is a Colombian speech-language pathologist (SLP). She is an Assistant professor at the Speech & Hearing Sciences Department at the University of New Mexico (UNM).

Training: Dr. Quique was trained as an SLP at the National University of Colombia. In 2020, she completed her doctoral studies in Communication Sciences and Disorders at the University of Pittsburgh under the mentorship of Drs. Michael Dickey and Will Evans. Between 2021-2023, she worked as a postdoctoral fellow at Northwestern University and the Shirley Ryan Ability Lab, mainly with Dr. Leora Cherney.

Research areas: Dr. Quique’s research has focused on the language rehabilitation of stroke survivors with aphasia. Specifically, she is committed to 1) developing culturally-sensitive and linguistically-specific aphasia interventions, especially for Spanish speakers; and 2) improving the efficacy and accessibility of aphasia treatments.

Awards: Dr. Quique received a Fulbright scholarship for her doctoral studies. She also worked as a Fogarty Global Health Fellow for Peru and Colombia. She is currently a Future Stroke Leader from the World Stroke Organization.

Professional: Dr. Quique was trained as an SLP in Colombia, where she practiced for over seven years. During that time, it gradually became evident that aphasia assessments and treatments were not designed for Spanish-speaking individuals and that a direct translation from English resources did not fully meet the needs of her patients. To address this disparity, her research program has focused on 1) developing culturally- and linguistically-specific aphasia interventions and 2) improving the efficacy and accessibility of aphasia treatments.
She completed her doctoral studies in Communication Science and Disorders at the University of Pittsburgh with an emphasis on aphasia rehabilitation. She also worked as a postdoctoral fellow at Northwestern University and the Shirley Ryan Ability lab, strengthening her aphasia rehabilitation training and combining it with practical training in healthcare services and outcomes research. Then, Dr. Quique expanded her work to global health. As a Fogarty Global Health Fellow, she worked on identifying barriers and facilitators of best-practice aphasia rehabilitation in Peru and Colombia. This experience allowed her to foster international collaborations between educational, research, and healthcare institutions.
Dr. Quique joined the Speech & Hearing Sciences Department at UNM in 2025, where she is proud to be a Latina in a Hispanic-serving institution in a US minority-majority state. At UNM, she continues developing culturally- and linguistically-specific interventions for minorities with aphasia and improving the efficacy and accessibility of aphasia treatments.

Publications: Dr. Quique has authored 17 publications, mostly on aphasia rehabilitation. She has presented her work nationally and internationally. Her list of publications and presentations can be found here: https://yina-quique.github.io/

In Private: Outside her work life, she enjoys coffee dates with her husband. She enjoys outdoor activities and loves nature. She also loves spending time with her niece and nephew.
